A&P Rolls Out Major Flu Vaccine Program

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. (A&P) has introduced what it calls an “aggressive” flu vaccine program enabling shoppers to get free and discounted seasonal flu and, when available, H1N1 (“swine flu”) vaccinations.

To that end, the Montvale, N.J.-based grocer has joined forces with ESI Medical for a series of multi-state flu vaccination clinics running through Dec. 23, 2009. All told, A&P will host over 600 flu vaccination clinics at 250 stores in six Northeast states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Clinic locations are available at www.getmyflushot.com.

Complementing this initiative, A&P has introduced a “Buy One Get One Free” flu shot offer. This offer entitles customers who use their Club Card through Oct. 29, 2009, and spend $100 on HBC products (excluding baby items) to a Wellness Reward Certificate good for one free flu vaccination when they buy an $30 accompanying flu shot. Additionally, any A&P customer receiving a flu shot at an in-store clinic will get a coupon book offering savings on hundreds of cough, cold/flu, grocery, nonfood and health items.

“As we head into cold and flu season, we want all of our shoppers to have the necessary items and services to help treat and prevent flu like symptoms,” said A&P senior director of pharmacy Carol J. DiNicolantonio. “Our highest priority is the well-being of our customers and associates, and as such, we are happy to provide convenient and affordable health solutions.”

“The goal for our partnership with A&P is to educate the public with regards to seasonal and H1N1 flu and provide easy access to vaccinations so they can adequately protect themselves and their families,” added Dr. Philip Passes, co-founder and managing partner of Belmar. N.J.-based ESI Medical, a physician-owned private duty home care agency specializing in live-in and hourly care, and vaccinations for flu, shingles and travel purposes.

The program will provide H1N1 vaccinations when they become available, which is anticipated to be early next month.

In related news, A&P recently debuted a Mail-Order Pharmacy program, which is designed to provide chronic and/or maintenance medications quickly, saves customers time and money and is especially convenient for shoppers who can’t visit the pharmacy in person or have a contagious illness that they don’t wish to spread to others in a public place.

A&P operates 435 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum’s, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
