Arizona Community, Biz Leaders Form Group to Help Bashas’ Out of Bankruptcy

Arizona business leaders are getting behind Bashas’ by encouraging local consumers to shop its stores, which include the Bashas’, Food City, A.J.’s Fine Foods, and Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits banners.

According to published reports, the local businesses cite the grocer’s strong community support over its 77-year history. One local businessman contributed $100,000 to launch the campaign.

Phoenix businessman Herman Chanen, who put up the money to get the campaign, “Friends of Bashas’,” off the ground, stressed that the group is not affiliated with Chandler, Ariz.-based Bashas’ or the Basha family. The group consists of 20 community leaders who each put up $5,000 toward the campaign, which will include a series of full-page newspaper ads, tens of thousands of bumper stickers and campaign buttons proclaiming: “I support Bashas’.” The group also printed 10,000 T-shirts for Bashas’ employees, according to reports.
