B. Green & Co. Names COO

B. Green & Co. said it appointed Rick Rodgers c.o.o., succeeding Steve Mitchell, who resigned his position for personal reasons, according to the company.

Rodgers will run the company's day-to-day operations, and will report to c.e.o. Benjy Green.

Rodgers comes to Baltimore-based retailer and distributor from Lanham, Md.-based Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, where he was s.v.p.-operations. Shoppers is owned by Supervalu, and operates 64 stores in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area.

B. Green & Co. operates two supermarkets, two cash-and-carries, and a wholesale redistribution business in the Mid-Atlantic region.

"[Rodgers] brings more than 20 years of local market retailing experience, and he has an understanding of ethnic marketing which will be a tremendous asset in helping grow our business," noted Green.

Rodgers started out as director of produce merchandising for Basics stores in 1986. In 1990, when the company's name changed to Metro Food Markets, Rodgers became a store director. He rose to v.p.-HBC/GM in 1992, and then v.p.-grocery procurement and v.p.-merchandising.

In 1998 Rodgers was named senior v.p.-marketing and merchandising, and in 1999, when Richfood combined the Metro operation into Shoppers, he became v.p.-grocery. In 2002 Rodgers was appointed s.v.p.-merchandising, and in 2005 became s.v.p.-marketing and merchandising, also holding the title of s.v.p.- alternative formats, in which capacity he led Shoppers' El Primero Mercado project. His most recent position at Shoppers was s.v.p.-operations.

"B. Green is growing, and Benjy Green has some great ideas on how to build this very unique business model," said Rodgers.

While maintaining the company's original cash-and-carry business on South Monroe Street in Baltimore, Green has expanded the operation to include two Food Depots and another cash-and-carry, both in Baltimore, as well as a wholesale redistribution business with depots in Baltimore and Richmond, Va.
