Balducci's Opens Mini Store at JFK Airport
BETHESDA, Md. -- Balducci's Food Lover's Market here has just opened an 800-square-foot store at the Delta terminal (Terminal 2) at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The outlet features self-service units offering salads and sandwiches, in addition to such items as yogurts, pastries, and fruit, while breakfast egg meals and hot pressed sandwiches are available to order at the service counter, according to a report in The New York Times.
The new location is just one of a range of new concessions at the airport, due to the recent awarding of three recent food and beverage contracts to Bethesda-based HMSHost, the world's largest travel dining and shopping operator, which now runs over 31 dining facilities at airports in the New York area.
"Many airlines think that what we eat and drink near their gates -- or bring on board -- is an integral part of a traveler's overall experience," said Joe Waller, v.p. of business development for HMSHost, in a statement. "Carriers want the airport food and beverage offerings to reflect their brands and their passengers' tastes."
Among the other retail outlets taking up residence at JFK include a Starbucks Coffee and a Sbarros/Greenwich Village Bistro, both set to open Terminal 1 this spring; a recently opened French Meadow Bakery and Cafe, which offers fresh-baked natural and organic muffins and scones, in Terminal 2; a Starbucks slated to open in late next month in Terminal 2; and a Balducci's, a Wolfgang Puck Gourmet Express & Wolfgang Puck Grab & Go (featuring gourmet sandwiches, soups, and pizzas), and two Starbucks, all three tentatively scheduled to open this fall in the British Airways Terminal (Terminal 7).
