Bi-Lo Starts Food Relief Project in Greenville, S.C.

Bi-Lo customers in Greenville, S.C. can help stock their local food pantries that serve the area's hungry by purchasing a bag of groceries for $5 at checkout.

The bag includes canned vegetables, tuna, and soup. Part of Bi-Lo Charities, the first Summer Hunger Relief program will operate through Aug. 12.

According to Bi-Lo, one in five children and one in five seniors go hungry every day in South Carolina.

Donated groceries will go to Harvest Hope Food Bank, which will distribute the food to needy area families. The demand for food has nearly doubled since last year, as prices have risen at Harvest Hope in Greenville, according to agency spokeswoman Vickie Brannen. "We're seeing many people who were just getting by before," she said. "Now these same people are scrambling to make ends meet, and they are increasingly turning to us for help."

Bi-Lo Charities donated $500,000 to Meals on Wheels and other food banks in Greenville last year.
