Big Y to Launch Prescription Plan for Uninsured, Underinsured Customers

This month Big Y Foods, Inc. will become the latest food retailer to offer a low- or no-cost prescription program, when it rolls out a plan for customers who have no prescription drug coverage or whose existing insurance doesn’t cover their prescription medication needs.

Starting March 19 at all 33 Big Y pharmacies in Massachusetts and Connecticut, these shoppers will be able to get a 90-day supply of over 300 generic prescriptions for $9.99, after paying an annual fee of $7.95. Once the customer is officially enrolled in the program, the pharmacist sets them up in the company’s electronic system.

The program includes medications that treat such common health problems as allergies, asthma and COPD, high blood pressure, mental illness and thyroid conditions.

“During these tough economic times, this new $9.99 plan should assist thousands of customers in maintaining their prescription drug needs,” said Big Y pharmacy director Michael G. Semanie.

Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y, one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, operates 57 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts and employs over 9,800 associates.
