Big Y Promotes 2
Big Y Foods, Inc. has appointed Kevin M. Barry to the position of director of produce and floral, and Richard D. Bossie to the role of district director for the Western zone of supermarkets.
As director of produce and floral, Barry is responsible for all functions, including sales, marketing and financial goals and strategy, in the produce and floral departments for the entire chain. He reports to VP for fresh foods Michael P. D’Amour.
An industry veteran with over 30 years of experience in the supermarket industry, Barry began his career at Star Markets in Boston as a full-time grocery department clerk. He then worked in the dairy and frozen departments, as part of the grocery-night stocking crew before moving to Chicago to work at Jewel, which, like Star, was then owned by American Stores. While at Jewel, Barry worked in all retail departments as part of a store manager trainee program, eventually becoming an assistant store manager and also an administrative clerk for produce at the division’s headquarters. By 1987, he was back in Boston to take part in Star’s store manager trainee program. In 1989, Barry became assistant meat buyer, three years later produce buyer, and then, in 1997, senior produce buyer. In 1999, Barry joined Big Y as senior produce buyer, a position he held until his current appointment.
As district director for the Western zone, Bossie oversees the day-to-day operations for fourteen Big Y stores, with responsibility for staff as well as all aspects of financial performance for the district. In addition, he acts as a liaison between the company’s Store Support Center and store-level teams to ensure optimal customer experiences. He reports to VP of operations William P. Hogan.
Bossie started his supermarket industry career in 1981 as a part-time service and grocery clerk at D&A Super market in Palmer, Alaska. In 1986, he came to Big Y as a part-time grocery clerk in the company’s Great Barrington, Mass., store. Over the next few years, he then rose through the ranks as a full-time grocery clerk, assistant grocery manager and grocery manager. In 1993, Bossie was accepted into Big Y’s store manager training program, and the following year became store manager at the Torrington, Conn., subsequently managing several other Big Y stores in the Nutmeg State. By 2006, Bossie had joined the operations team as a sales and merchandising mentor, in which capacity he assisted the marketing and operations departments with weekly sales, merchandising and training opportunities within one district, until his latest appointment.
Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y operates 56 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 9,100 employees.
