BJ's May Net Sales, Comps Up

NATICK, Mass. -- Food sales keep rising at BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. here, which reported yesterday that sales for May 2007 grew 8.2 percent, to $711.0 million, from $657.4 million last year.

Comparable-club sales rose 4.1 percent, including a contribution from gas sales of 1.0 percent and an adverse effect of 0.4 percent from the lack of pharmacy sales vs. May 2006. For the year-ago period, the retailer reported a comparable-club sales increase of 4.2 percent, including a contribution from gas sales of 2.2 percent.

Sales of food grew about 5 percent, while sales of general merchandise rose about 1 percent, according to the company.

Among the departments with strong sales increases vs. last year were milk and dairy, frozen fish and meat, juices, meat, soda and water, snacks, summer seasonal, major appliances, lawn and garden, and televisions. Weaker categories compared with last year included chemicals, coffee and tea, film and battery, furniture, generators, health and beauty, jewelry, paper products, and toys.

BJ's operates 174 BJ's Wholesale Clubs in 16 states.
