CENTER STORE EVENTS: Industry Readies for ‘World Pasta Day 2009’

The National Pasta Association (NPA) and the International Pasta Organization (IPO) are gearing up for “World Pasta Day 2009,” an Oct. 26 conference at which pasta manufacturers from around the world will present the latest nutritional and scientific research on pasta to the industry at large. World Pasta Day has celebrated the ubiquitous foodstuff, which is eaten globally some form, since 1995. This year’s event will focus on “Pasta Meals on Every Family Table.”

Among the conference presentations organized by the Oldways Preservation Trust, a Boston-based nonprofit education organization, are a scientific update on nutritional aspects of pasta for families, research on the impact of the Mediterranean Diet on Alzheimer’s disease, and a summary of recent research on carbohydrates. The annual event, which takes place this year at New York’s Millennium Broadway Hotel in Times Square, will also feature chef demonstrations. Additionally, culinary celebrities will take part 10-minute pasta meal cook-off, the results of which will be voted on by the audience.

Mark Vermylen, chairman of the Washington-based NPA, noted that the industry conference would “[showcase] the increasingly wide range of pasta’s health and economic benefits for today’s families around the globe.”

Sponsors of World Pasta Day 2009 include American Italian Pasta, Barilla, New World Pasta, Dakota Growers Pasta, the IPO, Italgrani USA, Philadelphia Macaroni and Rembrandt Foods.
