Costco Sees Strong Comps Across Fresh Foods

ISSAQUAH, Wash -- All fresh food categories are doing well at warehouse club retailer Costco Wholesale Corp., with produce leading the way with a mid-teen increase in comparable sales in the month of December, according to spokesperson Bob Nelson, who spoke during an investor conference call yesterday.

"We continue to see strong sale in food, sundries, deli, and candy," Nelson said. "Gasoline and pharmacy sales are also above average."

Costco saw net sales of $6.37 billion for the five weeks ended January 1, an increase of 10 percent from $5.77 billion in the same five-week period of the prior fiscal year. For the first 18 weeks, the company had sales of $20.22 billion, up 11 percent from $18.17 billion.

Costco's comps for the latest 5-week period increased 6 percent among its U.S. operations and 8 percent internationally. For the 18-week period, U.S. comp sales increased 8 percent domestically and 9 percent internationally.
