Danbury Stew Leonard's to Build Standalone Walgreens Pharmacy
NORWALK, Conn. -- Stew Leonard's here has received the final go-ahead to build a standalone pharmacy in the parking lot of its existing store in Danbury, Conn. Although the plan was first approved in 2002, it was revised to include handicapped parking, and that revision received approval just last week from the city's planning commission.
The pharmacy will be branded as a Walgreens, Stew Leonard's spokeswoman Meghan Flynn told Progressive Grocer, explaining that the grocer has a "prior relationship with Walgreens." The original Stew Leonard's in Norwalk leases space to a Walgreens store located across the street.
The pharmacy is more than just a real estate play. Asked why Stew Leonard's wishes to add the structure, Flynn explained, "Stew Leonard's doesn't have a pharmacy. A typical supermarket would." With the format's focus on fresh foods, a Walgreens drug store, "which carries a lot of the products Stew Leonard's doesn't," such as HBC, complements the food store's extensive perishable offering.
Flynn said construction work on the pharmacy, which will measure 15,000 square feet and include a drive-through window, would not start until after the July 4.
Besides units in Norwalk and Danbury, Stew Leonard's also has a store in Yonkers, NY, and is planning to open additional locations in Newington and Orange, Conn.; and the long Island town of East Farmingdale, N.Y.
