Dominick's Closings to Hit Estimated 900 Workers

CHICAGO -- The jobs of approximately 900 workers will be affected when 14 area Dominick's Finer Foods stores here close during the next month, the grocery chain said in documents filed with the state of Illinois.

In early February Dominick's Pleasanton, Calif.-based parent, Safeway, Inc. said it would close the stores, but didn't reveal details pertaining to the fate of the work force in the affected stores. Some stores have already closed, and the rest will continue to close through April.

A Dominick's spokeswoman said the company has been working to transfer some workers to other locations, according to a report in the Chicago Daily Herald, which published the number of jobs that would be affected by the closures.
