Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Collect Record Amount of Food
Under the auspices of the recently concluded eighth annual “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign, Food Lion banners and its sister division, Bottom Dollar Food, raised a record 1.5 million pounds of food for local food banks affiliated with Feeding America.
The initiative enabled shoppers to buy ready-made food boxes or contribute food in bins. Participants purchased about 250,000 boxes during the effort, which ran from Nov. 17 through Dec. 28.
The food boxes held five to seven items and were available at Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys, Reid's and Bottom Dollar Food stores for $4.99 each. Customers either bought the boxes or donated other nonperishable items, and the contributions went to Feeding America-affiliated food banks and their agencies.
Since the Salisbury, N.C.-based banners first teamed up with Feeding America in 2002, more than 250 million pounds of food have been donated to the organization and its affiliated food banks.
In 2010 alone, Food Lion Family and Bottom Dollar Food grocery donations to Feeding America came to more than 34 million pounds of food worth more than $51 million.
A subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, Food Lion Family operates more than 1,300 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Reid's banners. Full-shop discounter Bottom Dollar Food operates 29 stores in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
