Food Lion Joins Upromise to Help Families Save Money for College

Food Lion is among the latest grocery chains to sign on with Upromise, Inc., which gives the grocer's customers a way to save money for college when they shop at any of Food Lion's more than 1,200 locations in 11 states.

"Food Lion has always been committed to providing outstanding service and value to our customers," said Ken Mills, v.p. of sales and marketing for the Salisbury, N.C.-based chain. "By partnering with Upromise, we're introducing a brand-new benefit -- the ability for our customers to save money for college through their everyday grocery purchases."

To participate, shoppers can sign up for a Food Lion MVP Card and then visit Upromise.com to enroll and register their card in their Upromise account. Food Lion shoppers who are not yet Upromise members can join free and start saving for college at Upromise.com. Each time the customer shops at Food Lion, the cashier scans her MVP Card and Upromise will add contributions to the customer's Upromise account for purchases of participating products.

The amount of contribution varies from 1 percent to 5 percent of the cost of thousands of participating products. For example, if a customer buys Nestle Morsels, a contribution of 3 percent will be credited to that customer's Upromise account. A complete list of participating products is available at Upromise.com. In addition to the rewards, Upromise offers paperless e-coupons on such popular consumer brands as Gold Bond, Nestle, Charmin, Huggies and Little Debbie. Each month, new e-coupons up to $25 in value are available and can be used by clicking on participating products at Upromise.com/eCoupons. Each e-coupon is then automatically linked to a member's registered grocery or drug store card, and can be redeemed for college savings in the member's Upromise account upon in-store purchase of those products.

With the addition of Food Lion, more than 22,000 supermarkets and drug stores across the country now participate in Boston-based Upromise, which, over time, can help shoppers savings add up and be used to help offset the cost of education. Anyone can start an account for themselves, their child or any future college student.

A subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, Food Lion operates close to 1,200 supermarkets in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
