Food Lion Offers Ready-Prepped Holiday Meals
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Aiming to help families -- especially those who are culinary- or time-challenged -- gather at home and share a festive meal, Food Lion here is offering store-cooked dinners, including turkey, dressing and all of the fixings.
"Times are changing," said Tammy DeBoer, Food Lion v.p. of deli, bakery and home meal solutions merchandising. "Moms and dads are busy. Some see the holidays as a time to relax a little, not spend hours in the kitchen. At the same time, the family holiday meal is a tradition we cling to and want to continue."
That's where Food Lion can help, said DeBoer, with three different ready-prepared holiday meals offered at the chain's in-store delis. All that's required by the shopper is a little re-heating at home.
Food Lion's trio of meal packages range in price based on portions and servings. The Carolina Turkey Dinner, for $29.99, features an 8-to-10-lb. turkey; 2 lbs. of corn bread dressing; 1 lb. of giblet gravy, and a 12 oz. cranberry relish dish.
The Butterball Turkey Dinner, priced at $39.99, features a 10-to-12-lb. Butterball turkey, 2 lbs. of corn bread dressing, 2 lbs. of broccoli casserole, 1 lb. of giblet gravy, and 12 oz. of cranberry relish.
Food Lion is also offering a Smithfield Ham Dinner for $39.99, that includes: 2 lbs. of broccoli casserole, and 2 lbs. pounds of baked sweet potatoes.
With added components such as other fresh produce, canned vegetables, fresh breads, ready-to-eat desserts and beverages, a complete holiday meal can be purchased for approximately $60 or less, said DeBoer.
"For someone with little time or inclination to prepare a home-cooked meal, Food Lion offers a great, high quality alternative and a great value," DeBoer added. "Supermarket delis-bakeries have been a source for holiday party trays, cakes and other desserts for many years. Now we offer more home meal solutions and are ready to assist our time-pressed customers with all of their holiday meal needs."
Last year, during the Thanksgiving sales period, Food Lion stores sold approximately 1,452 tons of fresh turkey, 473 tons of fresh turkey breast, 8,217 tons of frozen turkey and 2,663 tons of frozen turkey breast, said DeBoer. During the 2004 Christmas sales period, Food Lion sold 395 tons of fresh turkey, 109 tons of fresh turkey breast, 1,158 tons of frozen turkey and 545 tons of frozen turkey breast.
Food Lion LLC, a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, operates 1,300 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys and Reid's banners.
