Food Lion, Safeway, Schnucks, Supervalu Named PBH Retail Role Models

Four grocery retailers have been recognized by the Produce for Better Health (PBH) Foundation for their efforts to encourage shoppers to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion LLC; Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway, Inc.; St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, Inc.; and Minneapolis-based Supervalu were all selected as Fruits & Veggies-More Matters Retail Role Models by the foundation.

“Throughout 2008, Food Lion, Safeway, Schnuck Markets, and Supervalu exhibited true support of the Fruits and Veggies-More Matters national public health initiative and great commitment to distributing the message that everyone should be eating more fruits and vegetables for their better health,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, president and CEO of Wilmington, Del.-based PBH, the nonprofit entity behind Fruits & Veggies-More Matters. “Food Lion, Safeway, Schnuck Markets, and Supervalu have played a significant role in encouraging everyone they serve to increase their fruit and vegetable consumption for their better health using their advertising and community outreach activities.”

Food Lion operates 1,300 stores nationwide either directly or through affiliated entities, under the Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys and Reid’s banners; Safeway operates 1,775 supermarkets across the country under several banners, including Safeway, Genuardi’s, Von's, Randall’s and Dominick’s; Schnuck Markets operates more than 100 stores in seven states; and Supervalu operates 2,500 stores nationwide, including the participating retail role model subsidiaries Acme Markets, Albertsons, Jewel, Shaw’s and Farm Fresh, as well as the company’s produce-buying subsidiary, W. Newell of Champaign, Ill.
