Giant-Carlisle Marks 85 Years in Business
This month Giant Food Stores celebrates the 85th year since founder David Javitch opened the Carlisle Meat Market, the forerunner of the current company. To mark the occasion, the now nearly 150-store chain will offer customers a range of special savings on groceries, as well as helping local food banks with donations.
"Eighty-five years later, Giant continues to believe in providing customers quality, selection and savings every day," noted Erik Keptner, senior vice president of marketing & advertising. "Even though our company has grown, we maintain our roots in central Pennsylvania and our strong connection to this community."
"Giant’s 85th anniversary is highlighted by a three-week promotional savings event for consumers," company spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski told Progressive Grocer.
The promotion has three primary components:
Additionally, through Sept. 13, Giant Food shoppers can donate $1 at the checkout to benefit their local food bank as part of the annual "Bag Hunger" in-store campaign. Last year, customers helped raise $300,000.

The promotion has three primary components:
- Weekly circular savings, including gas extra reward events that allow customers to earn bonus gas rewards points by purchasing participating products.
- An 85th anniversary value book featuring 85 recipes and healthy eating and savings tips. The book also features savings offers, including manufacturers' coupons.
- Giant Food Stores.com features the opportunity to register to spin the 85th anniversary wheel and win 85 gallons of gas. There will be over 100 winners.
