Giant Eagle Cuts Prices 12 Percent on 1,000-plus Items
PITTSBURGH -- The cuts keeping coming at Giant Eagle. For the fourth time in less than two years, the chain here yesterday launched a round of major price cuts, this time reducing everyday retail prices on more than 1,000 grocery items by an average of 12 percent.
The cuts, in the pet, frozen, canned, and snack items categories, take effect in all of the grocer’s 216 tri-state supermarket locations.
A Giant Eagle spokesman confirmed with Progressive Grocer that this fourth installment of the chain’s price reduction campaign ought to save customers an additional $18 million annually.
By dropping prices on commonly purchased items, Giant Eagle continues to build on the $104 million in annualized customer savings it has delivered since its first systemwide price reduction in November 2004, the grocer said.
In addition to lowering everyday prices, Giant Eagle said it continues to improve its overall customer value offering with high quality and variety in its perishable selections, Giant Eagle corporate brand enhancements, popular product lines such as a retailer gift card program, aggressive seasonal merchandising, ongoing weekly specials and promotions, and the continued expansion of earnings opportunities for the fuelperks! loyalty reward program.
Giant Eagle operates 140 corporate and 74 independently owned and operated supermarkets in addition to 100 fuel and convenience stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia, and Maryland.
