Giant-Landover Supports Childhood Cancer Research

Executives at Giant Food, LLC presented a $1 million check last month to Johns Hopkins to support pediatric leukemia research, with funds raised from the grocer's fourth annual Triple Winner Campaign.

The 2008 campaign was reached its goal of $1.5 million one month ahead of schedule. Proceeds were distributed to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Cancer Foundation, both in Baltimore.

The Triple Winner Game is a scratch-card promotion in which, for $1, customers get a ticket that allows them to win instantly a free product, a gift card or cash prize of up to $10,000. This year's campaign ran from April 4 until July 10.

Donald Small, acting director of the Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Oncology, the funds will go toward the establishment of the Giant Food Pediatric Leukemia and Tumor Program. "As federal funds tighten, private donations like these make it possible for us to make progress faster," noted Small. "This new program will allow us to significantly expand our research work in bone and soft tissue sarcomas, brain tumors, bone marrow transplantation, and leukemia."

"The Triple Winner Game exemplifies Giant's long-term commitment to supporting cancer research and treatment," said Giant Food e.v.p. and g.m. Robin Michel, adding that with the help of its associate, customers, and vendor partners, the Ahold USA banner has raised over $20 million for the cause.

Tragically, one of a Triple Winner poster child, the son of two Giant Food employees, died during this year's campaign, an occurrence that Michel said "underscored the need for our commitment to defeat this disease."

Landover, Md.-based Giant Food operates 184 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia and employs about 21,000 associates.
