Giant-Landover Taking ‘Local Route,' Too

Giant Food LLC has reintroduced its “Local Route” program in all 169 of its stores, with the aim of guiding customers to fresh, locally grown produce. Each week, under the program, Giant’s produce departments will highlight fresh local items in-store, as well as the farms from which they come.

As a leader in the Buy Local movement for many years, Giant also participates in the “Maryland’s Best” and “Virginia Grown” programs, supporting farmers and manufacturers in the states where they operate stores.

The banner’s sister Ahold USA-owned grocery chain, Stop & Shop, based in the Northeast, also recently relaunched Local Route in all of its stores.

“Summer is the ideal season to add more fruits and vegetables to daily diets,” said Diane Hicks, Giant’s director of produce. “Giant’s Local Route program recognizes the efforts of local farmers while providing customers with easier access to healthy options.”

Customers can visit the grocer’s website for additional program details and cooking tips, including recipes featuring locally grown produce.

Giant, based in Landover, Md., operates supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 20,000 associates.
