GMA Weighs in on Perchlorate

The Grocery Manufacturers Association yesterday released "Perchlorate: A Guide for Consumers, Policymakers and the Media," a science policy paper providing what it said is current and scientifically accurate information and resources on for journalists, health professionals, and policymakers.

Perchlorate is an environmental pollutant found in drinking water, milk, and foods.
"Based on well-established, peer-reviewed science, current levels of perchlorate in the diet do not appear to pose a significant health risk to consumers, including pregnant women and their offspring," GMA said. "FDA does not recommend a change in diet based on current perchlorate data, since many of these foods are major dietary sources of iodine and other nutritionally essential substances."

In the near future the trade group will also release science policy papers on acrylamide, responsible chemistry, high-fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and sodium.

The GMA board of directors is made up of chief executive officers from the association's member companies.
