Hannaford Bros., FoodPlay Team to Fight Childhood Obesity
SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here has entered into a partnership with FoodPlay Productions to promote healthy eating and exercise habits to 40,000 children in 100 elementary schools throughout Hannaford's five-state marketing area.
The "Fresh Adventures at Hannaford-FoodPlay Tour!" will bring "FoodPlay," a national Emmy-winning nutrition education theater program, to Northeast elementary schools across this year to help battle childhood obesity, which is reaching epidemic proportions.
The play includes juggling, music, magic, and audience participation with messages to help children take responsibility for their health. Founded in 1982 by nutritionist, Barbara Storper, FoodPlay Productions has educated over two million schoolchildren across the United States. Besides "FoodPlay," the organization stages "This Is Your Life!" for middle schools.
As part of the Hannaford-sponsored tour, schools will receive a live "FoodPlay" theater assembly, along with follow-up materials for teachers, students, parents, school food service, and health staff.
Student materials include a "Passport to Fresh Adventures!" booklet with stickers offering kids a colorful, interactive way to keep track of their fruit and vegetable intake. When they've filled up their passports and thereby "traveled the world," students can redeem a special prize at their local Hannaford store.
This spring the tour is scheduled to stop in the following Massachusetts cities: Berkley, Chelmsford, Leominster, Lowell, Duxbury, Marlborough, North Brookfield, North Quincy, and Taunton.
Employing more than 24,000 associates, Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 152 supermarkets and food-and-drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners.
