Hannaford Bros. Joins Produce for Kids Initiative
SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co., based here, is the latest retailer to sign on to this year's Produce for Kids (PFK) program, which promotes the importance of adding more fruits and vegetables to children's daily diets, in addition to raising funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals serving local communities.
Acme Markets, Meijer, Kroger, and Giant-Carlisle are among the other grocers to do so. More than 150 Hannaford Supermarkets are participating in the initiative, which this year offers nutritional expert Connie Evers and an online healthy kid's club at http://www.produceforkids.org.
Throughout the month of June, Hannaford will promote the following sponsors in its stores: Shuman Produce's Realsweet Vidalia Onions, Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet Pineapples in whole and fresh-cut varieties, Fresh Express Packaged Salads, T. Marzetti Refrigerated Salad Dressings, Stemilt Growers' Apples; Chiquita Bananas, Giorgio Mushrooms, and Salyer American Broccoli.
Participating sponsors contribute to Children's Miracle Network by making a per-unit donation based on shipments of select items to Hannaford. All funds directly benefit Children's Miracle Network hospitals in the areas served by those retailers taking part in the program.
"Produce for Kids is a great opportunity for shoppers to participate in a very worthy cause in the course of their usual grocery shopping," said Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein in a statement. "Hannaford is pleased to give back to the community by supporting local Children's Miracle Network hospitals." Hannaford first began participating in PFK in 2004.
PFK, an annual program created by Reidsville, Ga.-based Shuman Produce Inc., has raised more than $475,000 to date. Co-sponsors support the program and make a per-unit donation to Children's Miracle Network.
Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 152 supermarkets and food-and-drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners. Hannaford employs over 24,000 associates.
