Hannaford Rolls Out 7th Annual School Program

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Supermarkets here has launched its seventh annual "Hannaford Helps Schools," which enables customers at Hannaford stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York to support schools in their areas by earning "School Dollars" between Sept. 2 and Dec. 1.

The program, which is open to K-12 schools, offers shoppers the chance to raise funds for such items as playgrounds, sports gear and computers. To raise money, shoppers buy participating products, and for every four participating products purchased, customers get three School Dollars. There's no limit to the number of products that can be bought during each shopping trip. Last year over 2,400 schools took part in the program, raising more than $730,000.

"Hannaford recognizes that budgets do not always reflect the number of programs schools would like to offer," noted Hannaford marketing specialist Evan Harding in a statement. "This program provides an easy way for schools to raise additional funds."

Equivalent to cash, School Dollars can be turned into to a particular school or placed in special collection bins at any Hannaford location. All schools must turn in their "School Dollars" to the store where they are registered by Dec. 14. Checks will be mailed to participating schools in March 2008.

As well as the "School Dollars" earned by schools, each Hannaford store will award an additional $1,000 education grant to the school that raises the most money. In a new feature this year, 10 schools, including two schools in each of the five states where Hannaford operates, will win the "Radio Disney Rockin' Recess" or the "Radio Disney Jump In To Fitness" program.

The Radio Disney Rockin' Recess, designed for elementary and middle school students, is an interactive dancing and singing activity, with the aim of getting kids up and active. Radio Disney Jump In To Fitness, an assembly for middle and high school students, encourages students to leave their computers and video games and become interested in physical fitness.

This year there are more than 900 eligible products in the program, among them Hannaford private label items and products from General Mills, Kellogg's, Bayer, Clorox, Heinz, Hormel, Ocean Spray, Gorton's, Welch's, Bush's Baked Beans, Keebler, King Arthur, and Irving Tissue.

Over one-quarter of the eligible products receive at least one star under Hannaford's "Guiding Stars" program, introduced in September 2006. One, two, or three stars stand for good, better, and best nutritional value.

A school can find out if it's registered for the program or get more information at www.hannaford.com/hhs. Schools that took part in the 2006 program will be automatically registered for the program. New schools should visit the Hannaford Web site by Nov. 23 to register. All registered schools receive a Hannaford Helps Schools kit, which contains program information, posters, and a participating product list, as well as tips on how to run a successful campaign.

To date, the program has raised more than $3.2 million for schools in Hannaford's market areas.
