Hannaford Selects Mass. Ad Agency, Helps Needy Celebrate Turkey Day

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here has chosen Watertown, Mass.-based Allen & Gerritsen to handle its advertising account, according to published reports.

The agency won out over two other finalists, New York's DeVito/Verdi and Tierney Philadelphia's Communications, in a review by Pile and Co., a Boston-based management consulting firm.

In other Hannaford news, 14 Hannaford stores in central and northern Maine are taking part in "Donate A Bag - Donate A Meal," a program this month to provide needy families in the state with a Thanksgiving meal. The program, now in its third year, allows customers to buy all of the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, and 100 percent of the purchased food is contributed to area food pantries and soup kitchens, which distribute the items to local households.

Each participating store has preassembled bags containing instant garlic potatoes, stuffing mix, buttermilk biscuit mix, corn, carrots, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, graham-cracker pie crust, chocolate pudding, and Dream Whip.

When shoppers tell a cashier that they would like to buy a bag, it's included with their order. Each bag of food has a retail value of $10. Customers may also elect to purchase a $10 gift card to be used to buy a turkey.

Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 158 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners.
