Harris Teeter to Expand Greensboro Ops to 1M SQ
In the third expansion of its Greensboro, N.C., distribution facility since acquiring it in 1984, Harris Teeter will add 50,000 square feet to its perishable warehouse, bringing it up to 225,000 square feet, according to a published report. This latest expansion will enable the Matthews, N.C.-based grocer to “better accommodate and more efficiently serve” about half of its 198 stores, communication specialist Catherine Reuhl told the Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area.
The warehouse is part of a distribution complex that supplies over 3,600 products to stores in the surrounding region, the Outer Banks and as far north as Delaware. Following the expansion, the complex will measure more than 1 million square feet.
According to Reuhl, the project, which is scheduled to wrap up in September, won’t create new jobs. John S. Clark Co., LLC is acting as the project’s general contractor.
Harris Teeter added a frozen food facility in 1991 and a perishable warehouse in 1997. The latter employs 150 of the Greensboro distribution center’s 772 workers.
Noting in the publication that the Triad area was “huge market” for the company, grocery expert Burt P. Flickinger III said he expects the distribution facility to grow a fourth or fifth time in the following four to five years.
