Harveys Takes Ga. Bagging Championship Twice in a Row
Harveys Supermarkets has won its second straight Georgia State Best-Bagger Championship, with Danny Goodwin of Augusta, Ga., taking the top prize at this year’s Georgia Food Industry Association (GFIA) competition.
An employee at the Harveys in Waynesboro, Ga., Goodwin has worked at Harveys for almost five years. He competed against four baggers from other Georgia retailers in two rounds, plastic bag and reusable bag, earning first place in both rounds. Competitors must bag a number of items, among them bread, eggs, cereal, chips, canned goods, noodles, boxed cookies and boxed dinners, into three plastic bags and then two reusable bags. Contestants were judged on speed, weight distribution and correct placement of products.
Goodwin won over $2,000 in cash and prizes, as well as the opportunity to go to Las Vegas in February 2010 to compete for the national title.
To prepare for the competition, Goodwin practiced his bagging skills for four hours daily for five months with Harveys training specialist Teresa Hutcheson. He intends to train for the February event as well.
An affiliate of Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion, LLC, a subsidiary of Belgian retail conglomerate Delhaize Group, Harveys operates 70 stores in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.
