HEB to Launch Literacy Campaign

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here is gearing up to launch its Read Write Connect campaign to promote literacy and learning throughout its home state.

The campaign will include a short story contest open to all students in Texas middle and high schools, in which two grand-prize winners will receive four years of tuition to any Texas state university, according to published reports.

Another element of the campaign, the Read Write Connect (RWC) Reader's Choice Program, will highlight new releases while offering discounts on book purchases. HEB will also sponsor a book-recycling program and present a $15,000 check to The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas.

Also as part of the program, HEB's mascot for children, H-E-Buddy, will be featured in two books and four activity books to be released in May.

In related news, HEB is delivering food and other emergency supplies to on-site rescue workers and families of the miners affected by the gas explosion in northern Mexico. The donation is being coordinated through the food bank in Cuidad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico, which HEB helped establish in 1992.

"This is a very tragic situation and one that has touched HEB personally," said Dya Campos, HEB director of public affairs. "One of our partners has a family member among the missing. We want to support her and the other families during their time of great need."

Today HEB will deliver 75 dispensas to the families of the miners. Dispensas, a Mexican custom, consist of a clear plastic bag filled with food and other supplies. HEB and food bank representatives will personally deliver the dispensas every other week for the next three months.
