Houston Food Bank Event Nets Million-plus Pounds of Produce
HOUSTON - The Houston Food Bank here received a generous "Gift of Produce" totaling more than 1.4 million pounds of fruits and vegetables from the Houston Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association (HFFVA), for distribution to the food bank's 400 member agencies serving 18 counties in southeast Texas.
The donation represented the 20th annual Gift of Produce, held at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. Each year for the last nineteen, the Houston Food Bank has received this Gift of Produce which, since the inception of the event, has grown from a yield of 100,000 pounds of produce in the first year to more than one million pounds each year for the past six years.
In total, this event has brought in approximately 15,800,000 pounds of produce for distribution to the hungry in Houston and southeast Texas - an amount that is equivalent to nearly five miles of 18-wheelers placed end to end, or 395 tractor-trailers full of produce that would wrap around Minute Maid Park eight times.
HFFVA is a nationally recognized professional organization with a membership of 100 firms and individuals in the produce industry, including retailers, wholesalers, growers, and shippers.
