Independent Natural Grocer Opens Unit in Washington, D.C.
Richmond, Va.-based Ellwood Thompson's Local Market, soon to celebrate its twentieth anniversary, will open its second store in Washington, D.C. in fall/winter of 2009, an organic and natural market of 15,000 square feet that will serve the District's Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods.
Each department of the new market will emphasize local products, found within a 100-mile radius, just as the grocer's Richmond store does.
The market will offer naturopathic vitamins, supplements, and personal care, local produce, bulk, meat and seafood, wine, cheeses, and fresh baked goods, the independent said. Award-winning chef and vegan cookbook author, Jannequin Bennett, will direct prepared foods from Ellwood's Kitchen. Community seating inside and outside with wireless Internet will be available.
Ellwood Thompson's will also offer incentives for conservation and recycling in the form of monetary envirocredits for walking, biking and mass transit and reusing shopping bags, water and food containers. Those who have to drive will have easy access to the underground parking deck from Park or Hiatt Streets.
