Jennie-O Recalls 23,021 Pounds of Turkey
WILLMAR, Minn. - Jennie-O, the turkey products subsidiary of Hormel Foods Corp., on Friday voluntarily recalled 23,021 pounds of foodservice and supermarket deli turkey products because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The recall was a precautionary measure in consultation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to the company. No illnesses or consumer complaints had been reported on Friday.
The turkey had been distributed for food service and supermarket deli use in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington. The company said it believes none of the products remain in distribution.
The products were packaged at West Central Turkeys in Pelican Rapids, Minn., on Dec. 31, 2001. The production lot numbers for these products is 3655 and they have the West Central Turkey establishment number P-403 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture seal of inspection.
"Because food safety has always been, and will continue to be, a top priority at Jennie-O, we are taking these precautionary steps in conjunction with the USDA," said Julie Craven, spokesperson for Jennie-O. "We strictly abide by the food safety guidelines put in place by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the USDA to make sure our products are safe. We are working closely with the USDA to identify the source of the contamination and to resolve this matter quickly."
