Jewel-Osco, Coca-Cola Partner to Host Black History Event, Promo

CHICAGO -- Jewel-Osco based here, along with Coca-Cola, will honor Black History Month at the 9th annual "Taste of Black History" kick-off reception set for Jan. 24 at DuSable Museum.

NBC 5 anchorman Warner Saunders will serve as master of ceremonies for the program, which begins at 10 a.m. and will feature a performance by the Black Nativity Dancers, an introduction of Jewel-Osco African-American vendors, a supplier diversity video presentation, grant awards to six Chicago nonprofit organizations, and raffles where guests can win prizes.

Following the program, guests will have an opportunity to taste and experience "Cookin' Combos" -- celebrities' favorite dishes prepared using Jewel-Osco's African-American vendor products. As guests taste and sample the dishes, they will also have the opportunity to learn how these Jewel-Osco entrepreneurs created their products.

"Black History Month is a time to recognize African-Americans who have made outstanding contributions in this country," said Keith Nielsen, president of Jewel-Osco. Nielsen said each year, Jewel-Osco commemorates "African-Americans who are giving back to the community and making a difference. Our African-American vendors here at Jewel are making a difference, so we are recognizing them by featuring their outstanding products."

During the program, Jewel-Osco will recognize and award more than $30,000 in grants to six community organizations that serve and make a difference in various communities, including the DuSable Museum of African-American History, Rev. Dr. Father Pfleger's St. Sabina Church, Black-On-Black Love, Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action, Westside Association for Community Action, and Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

With a market-leading position in Chicago, the Jewel-Osco subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu operates 184 stores in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.
