K-VA-T Food Stores to Enter Roanoke, Va. Trade Area

K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. will make its first foray into the Roanoke, Va. trade area in late fall. The grocer will locate a new Super Dollar Discount Foods store in 26,000 square feet of a former Winn-Dixie store in the town of Vinton, a suburb on Roanoke's west end.

The Vinton location will stretch the grocer's market area further east in Virginia, touching the largest city in the state's southwestern region.

Abingdon, Va.-based K-VA-T operates Food City, its conventional format, and Super Dollar Discount Foods, a limited-assortment format offering meat, produce, and canned items. The grocer currently operates seven Super Dollar stores, the company said.

The new Vinton store will anchor River Park Shopping Center on Bypass Road. K-VA-T signed a 10-year lease on the location, with the option to renew five times at five years each, according to the broker for the leasing agreement.

"Since our first store opening, we've more than doubled the number of items we offer, including additional flavors, sizes, and variety in just about every category," noted K-VA-T president and c.e.o. Steven C. Smith in a recent interview. "And because we buy directly from the manufacturer, we receive a lower cost, which we pass on to our customers. This means huge savings off the national brand price."

Privately held K-VA-T Food Stores operates 98-plus retail food outlets throughout southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and northeast Tennessee.
