Kroger Building New Stores to Compete with Wal-Mart in Atlanta
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Kroger Co. is taking on Wal-Mart in the metro Atlanta market by building several 70,000-square-foot stores close to the retailing giant's supercenters, according to a report in the Gwinnett Daily Post.
Kroger plans to build a new 70,000-square-foot supermarket in Stone Mountain, Ga., just a mile from where Wal-Mart is converting one of its aging stores into a new supercenter. The company will reportedly close its existing store on Stone Mountain Highway.
The Cincinnati-based retailer also recently decided to launch a king-sized store just down the road from a new Duluth Wal-Mart supercenter, according to the report.
Trade Dimensions data shows Kroger as the metro Atlanta market leader, followed by Publix and Wal-Mart. However, the Bentonville, Ark.-retail giant is currently replacing all its older stores with new supercenters.
