Mars Petcare US Recalls Quantity of Gourmet Cat Food on Salmonella Threat

Mars Petcare US said yesterday it was recalling a "limited number" of bags of Special Kitty Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold at Wal-Marts in 15 states, after routine testing uncovered evidence of Salmonella contamination.

The Franklin, Tenn.-based manufacturer said yesterday it had not received any reports of illness resulting from consumption or handling of the recalled product.

Wal-Mart had been selling the cat food in question at stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The recalled items Special Kitty Gourmet Blend dry cat food 3.5 lb., 7 lb., and 18 lb. bags with a "Best If Used By" date of Aug. 11, 2009. The production lot code starts with the two digits "50," Mars Petcare US said.
