Mass Merchandisers Release October Sales
NEW YORK - Several major retailers released October store sales today. Discounters and other value-oriented merchants reported the best results.
* Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said its sales at stores open at least a year increased a higher than expected 6.7 percent from a year earlier in October. Net sales in the four weeks ended Nov. 2 rose 14.6 percent to $16.62 billion from $14.50 billion a year earlier.
* Kmart Corp., the No. 2 U.S. discount chain behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc., reported a 4.4 percent decrease in October sales at stores open at least a year. Total net sales for the four weeks ended Oct. 31 fell 4.9 percent, to $2.42 billion from $2.54 billion a year earlier, it said.
* Target Corp. reported that its net retail sales for the four weeks ended Nov. 3, 2001 increased 8.9 percent to $2.873 billion from $2.638 billion for the four-week period ended Oct.r 28, 2000. Comparable-store sales increased 2.0 percent from October 2000.
