McGinnis Sisters Open First Ground-Up Location
It was a big day Wednesday for Pittsburgh's three well-known local women grocers - Bonnie Vello, Noreen Campbell, and Sharon Young, a.k.a. the McGinnis Sisters - who not only opened their third grocery store in the city's northern suburbs, but also picked up an award later that evening as owners of the region's best gourmet grocer from Pittsburgh Magazine.
"Our third location in Adams Township... is situated on a great corridor in the heart of a wonderful community," Sharon McGinnis Young told Progressive Grocer during a walk-through during the soft opening of the sister act's first-ever ground-up store.
Young, who worked closely with the new store's designers, said that among the many "firsts" on display in the sleek, cozy 17,000-square-foot store are McGinnis Sisters' first floral department, a high impact state-of-the-art service seafood case, bulk foods, Counter Culture source-verified coffee, and a brick oven for custom-made pizzas.
An in-store cafe offers take out and also in-store or dining, with free WiFi and ample seating. The store's airy open floor plan features floating ceilings and plasma screen TVs.
Perhaps the most significant distinction for store number three, however, is that roughly 50 percent of its inventory is comprised of conventional grocery products, while the first two stores are place more emphasis on the McGinnis's signature specialty and gourmet items.
In line with McGinnis Sisters' long-time commitment to supporting local suppliers, the produce department showcases a wide variety of locally grown items. The store also features a large selection of fresh meat, ice-packed fresh poultry, Foley seafood flown in daily, a large deli and prepared foods lineup, a full service bakery, and an international service cheese counter.
A formal grand opening celebration is slated to take place later this month.
