Meijer in Deal With Local Newspaper to Stuff B-t-S Backpacks
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- To make sure needy local children get ready for the new school year, Meijer Inc. here and partner The Saginaw News collected more than $2,000, to buy 116 backpacks and supplies.
Each $20 worth of donations toward the Help Stuff A Backpack purchased one backpack stuffed with supplies. Eighty percent of each dollar went to the backpacks, and 20 percent went to the Newspaper In Education initiative, which provides free newspapers to classrooms in Saginaw County, Michigan.
The backpacks are stuffed with three fiction books, a three-ring binder, notebook paper, a 24-pack of Crayons, glue sticks, pencils, a ruler, a box of facial tissue, snacks, and information about literacy.
Volunteers from Meijer and the newspaper will deliver the backpacks to 13 public school districts and the Saginaw Intermediate School District, which will in turn distribute backpacks to charter schools and academies.
The Help Stuff A Backpack partnership has collected enough money to donate 750 backpacks to children since 2001.
Meijer, which operates 176 supercenters featuring over 40 departments throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, will be nationally recognized in Progressive Grocer's December 2006 issue as its Retailer of the Year.
