"Meijer is committed to actively being a part of improving the care and treatment of a disease that continues to affect our country at a rapidly expanding pace," said Healthy Living senior advisor Shari Steinbach. "Our goal is to provide meaningful, practical solutions related to diet and nutrition because, let's face it -- the grocery store is where most food choices are made."
Said Steinbach, "There is a lot of information available to consumers about diabetes and diet in general, but most people just want something that is practical, easy to understand and user friendly. This is exactly what we are providing."
The Meijer Healthy Living menu planner is designed to help diabetic consumers make healthy food choices, and is based on a basic diet guide for an individualized meal plan. The plan provides approximately 1,800 calories per day with about half the calories from carbohydrates, and less than 30 percent from fat.
The wellness log, intended to complement the menu planner, includes date boxes big enough to record important information such as doctor appointments and blood glucose levels.
The daily menu planner and diabetes wellness log will be available to consumers in the pharmacy at each of Meijer's 176 stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. The chain will give 500 away free at each pharmacy beginning on November 6, 2006. On November 11, all stores will hold in-store Healthy Living demos, and distribute the tools near their pharmacies.
Meijer collaborated with the Michigan Diabetes Outreach Network, pharmaceutical companies, and food manufacturers for the program.
Meijer's Healthy Living program, currently in its third year, offers consumers a variety of resources. It features nutrition information in advertisements, in-house brochures and a shelf labeling system. Consumers can also log onto Meijer's Web site to find weekly menus that integrate current sale items and healthy recipes.
The family-owned and -operated Meijer operates 176 grocery and general merchandise supercenters throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. Meijer has been chosen as Progressive Grocer's 2006 Retailer of the Year and will be featured in an extensive profile in the magazine's December 2006 issue.
