Meijer Lends Support to 30th Detroit Jazz Fest
Meijer, Inc. has stepped up to the grandstand to support the upcoming Detroit International Jazz Festival by donating funds for an education stage and a family-friendly “Kid Bop” area at THE free Labor Day musical event. Invited high school jazz bands, ranked among the best in the state, will represent 11 Michigan communities as they perform on the Meijer Education Stage in Campus Martius Park.
“The Jazz fest is a wonderful Detroit tradition, and we are excited to help bring a family-focused component to the event,” said Scott Seling, group VP of operations for Meijer’s East Region.
The family activities will extend from one end of the 2 million-square-foot festival to the other, as Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer, which is planning to enter the Detroit market for the first time in 2011, is also co-sponsoring the Kid Bop Area on Hart Plaza, where “wee boppers” and their parents can enjoy storytelling, tap dancing and scat-singing lessons, among other activities.
In light of the estimated 93,000 Michigan residents who are expected to lose their unemployment benefits before the end of the year, Meijer and Jazz Festival organizers are also asking those who attend the free event to consider donating a nonperishable food item at the Meijer truck for an on-site food drive on behalf of Gleaners Community Food Bank.
