Metro Suits Up as Ottawa Senators’ Exclusive Grocery Sponsor

Metro, Inc. and the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club have signed a five-year agreement making the Canadian grocer the team’s exclusive grocery sponsor. The deal took effect at the start of the 2009-2010 National Hockey League season this month.

“Metro is about bringing people together for food at its best, and the Senators bring hockey fans together for hockey at its best, so there is great synergy here,” enthused Marc Giroux, national VP of marketing at Montreal-based Metro, which operates numerous stores and employs over 30,000 people in the team’s home province of Ontario.

To mark the new partnership, Metro and the Senators will roll out the Metro Family 4 Pack during two Canadian Thanksgiving games, against the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday, Oct. 10 and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, Oct. 12. The Metro Family 4 Pack consists of four tickets, four drinks and four hotdogs for $99 at 10 select games during the 2009-2010 season.

“Metro’s ticket package now allows more fans the opportunity to enjoy Senators’ games, and the package includes food and beverage,” noted Senators president Cyril Leeder. “And with more fans in the stands supporting our team, we know our players also appreciate Metro’s assistance in filling the seats at Scotiabank Place and creating an exciting atmosphere.”

The grocer runs 272 stores under two conventional banners, Metro and A&P, and one discount banner, Food Basics.
