Minyard's New Carnival Flagship Opens
COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores here is celebrating the opening of a new flagship Carnival Super Market in Dallas this week, which the chain said will serve as a prototype for other new stores moving forward.
The 56,000-square-foot grocery store in Oak Cliff will act as a testing ground for Carnival's expanding chain, according Minyard, which added that the flagship represents the chain's strongest commitment to date toward the growing number of Hispanic shoppers in its trade area.
"Imagine a farmers market where the produce is always crisp and the smell of fresh bread and pastries floats past as you select tender cuts of meat and fresh seafood for your family," said Minyard, in a descrption of the format on its Web site that touches on many recognized Hispanic retailing hot buttons. "Imagine a place that traces back to the aromas of your grandmother's kitchen, and sounds like your family gathering for a meal. Imagine a place that feels like home."
Amid festive balloons and the melodies of a mariachi band, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the store, in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood, at 8 a.m. tomorrow. During the event, a priest and a minister will bless the new store, while local dignitaries and top Carnival Supermarket executives will also say a few words to celebrate the occasion.
The first 100 customers in the door will receive giveaways that include valuable coupons for a variety of store items. Free glucose screenings will be available in the farmacia (pharmacy) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
There will be a drawing for prizes that include a pickup truck, a motorcycle, a 32-inch TV, 10 $100 gasoline cards, a four-day Disney vacation, and a washer and dryer.
Also on opening day, FC Dallas/Verizon will sponsor a tailgate party in the parking lot (5-7 p.m.), and there will be a Monster Truck sampling tent in the morning and in early evening.
Other special events will take place through Labor Day weekend and beyond.
The new Carnival flagship will place heavy emphasis on peripheral departments, including a carniceria, or fresh meat department; seafood department; bakery/deli; fruiteria, featuring fresh fruit and juices; and a cocina, or kitchen, where customers can specialty order prepared foods to take out or eat in. The store will also feature an in-store clinic from Dallas-based MedXpress. This is the first of an estimated 25 in-store clinics Minyard Food Stores has said it plans to open in its stores.
Minyard Food Stores operates 67 supermarkets, 40 pharmacies, and 15 "On the Go" fuel stations, in six surrounding counties of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Its portfolio includes 24 Minyard, 19 Sack'n Save, and 25 Carnival Food units.
