More Details Surface on Wal-Mart's Small Concept
BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is getting closer to making its new small-scale grocery stores a reality in Arizona, according to city planning officials cited in a Reuters report.
The retailer is reportedly refining plans it submitted to launch 15,000-square-foot stores in former drug stores in four cities southeast of Phoenix. Wal-Mart is targeting the suburban communities of Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe, which include some of the locations that are close to where Tesco has opened its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets stores, according to Reuters. Wal-Mart reportedly filed applications late in 2007 requesting various tenant improvements to the vacant drug stores. The properties are zoned already for retail use and can be approved administratively.
