Morrisons Supermarkets to Consolidate Payment-processing Systems

U.K. retailer Morrisons plans to install a new payment-processing system for all of the card payment processing in its stores and fuel stations, which encompass more than 380 sites.

The company is working with Norcross, Ga.-based S1 to install the latter’s Retail Payments solution, which will acquire, process, and consolidate card payment transactions originating from Morrisons’ more than 12,000 points of sale. The selection of S1 is part of the retailer’s major IT investment program, which involves upgrading its systems to a modern, open architecture.

When considering options for the new payments solution, Morrisons looked for a system that could process millions of transactions a month reliably and securely; integrate seamlessly with other best-of-breed components; and comply with the necessary EMV and PCI DSS mandates. After a detailed and extensive evaluation process, the company chose the S1 Retail Payments solution because it demonstrated that it could meet all of these demands.

“When selecting new suppliers for our IT transformation program, we looked for financially healthy and stable market leaders with a track record of comparable and established installations globally,” said Gary Barr, IT director at Bradford, Yorkshire-based Morrisons. “S1 not only offered proven software solutions, but also met all our requirements for a long-term relationship.”

According to S1, its multi-channel payments architecture will enable Morrisons to migrate existing disparate payments channels —for in-store registers, self-checkouts, cafes and dry cleaning, as well as fuel filling stations and unattended fuel payments — into a single, consolidated environment. An S1 register software component will reside on each Morrisons point-of-sale, and will integrate with PIN entry devices and Retalix StoreLine applications, which were also selected as part of the program. The solution is currently being rolled out nationally, with the first store already live at Guisborough in Yorkshire.

Morrisons will also implement S1’s central back-office payments component, which was developed to provide comprehensive management information and reporting. The system includes improved reconciliation and settlement capabilitie,s and provides back-office staff with a single, real-time, end-to-end view of all transactions.

Morrisons operates 378 stores and 285 fuel stations, and employs 117,000 associates.
