New Book on Wal-Mart's Secrets Published

INGOMAR, Pa. -- Michael Bergdahl, a full-time motivational speaker and writer based here, has published "The 10 Rules of Sam Walton," (Wiley, May 2006), his second book to reveal the secrets behind Wal-Mart's success and show readers how they might emulate some of the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth's most effective entrepreneurial strategies. His previous book, published in 2004, "What I Learned from Sam Walton: How to Compete and Thrive in a Wal-Mart World," details his experiences working for the world's largest retailer.

In the new book, Bergdahl identifies the 10 key result areas developed by Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, and discusses the organizational discipline required to execute those tenets.

According to Bergdahl, Walton's 10 rules were:

--Commit to achieving success and always be passionate.

--Share success with those who have helped you.

--Motivate yourself and others to achieve your dreams.

--Communicate with people and show you care.

--Appreciate and recognize people for their effort and results.

--Celebrate your own and other's accomplishments.

--Listen to others and learn from their ideas.

--Exceed expectations of customers and others.

--Control expenses and save your way to prosperity.

--Swim upstream, be different, and challenge the status quo.

A former human resources executive at Wal-Mart headquarters, where he worked directly with Walton, Bergdahl has appeared on CNN, CNBC, CBS National Public Radio, and Bloomberg TV, and has written columns for such business publications as Progressive Grocer and its sister publication Convenience Store News.
