New Pembroke Pines, Fla. Wal-Mart Will Feature Unusual Design, Fewer Signs

PEMBROKE PINES, FLA. - When a new Super Wal-Mart replacement store on Pines Boulevard at Southwest 184th Avenue opens next March, it will feature an unusual design - said to look more like a series of stores rather than one huge box - and will be devoid of the retailer's signature "Always" slogan over the two front doors, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The City Commission upheld the Planning & Zoning Board's March 13 recommendation against the signs. The board, known for limiting the size, number, and colors of signs along Pines Boulevard, said the building would look cleaner without the "Always" signs and that nobody would have a problem knowing the store is a Wal-Mart.

For its part, Wal-Mart's attorney, Susan Motley, told the commission that the building would look unfinished without the signs, which she described as "very attractive."

While the store's design was all that commissioners were scheduled to consider, they heard out complaints from homeowners in the surrounding neighborhoods, who said that noise from the store would intrude on their lifestyles.

Completion of the new supercenter will be followed by the demolition of the original 5-year-old Wal-Mart on the same lot, which will remain open during construction.
