Nutritionist Hired for New Giant-Carlisle Super Food Store

CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Giant Super Food Store slated to open March 5 in Willow Grove, Pa. will feature an in-store nutritionist, as well as an increased emphasis on health-and-wellness products, programs and services, including an expanded assortment of healthy, natural and organic products, the company Giant-Carlisle said.

The nutritionist, Mary Ann Moylan, will assist customers with questions on healthy eating, the company said. The retailer also recently hired Sylvia Emberger as its corporate nutritionist.

"Living a healthy lifestyle has become a major focal point in today's society," noted Shawn McGrory, manager of the 97,300-square-foot Willow Grove location, which will be Giant's largest in the state of Pennsylvania. "As one of the few grocery store chains in the country to offer the services of a nutritionist right in the store, we are in a unique position to help customers incorporate healthful changes into their everyday diets. Customers appreciate the availability of an expert to help them navigate the barrage of health information in the marketplace and help them make the right choices for their families."

The multilingual Moylan, who has 32 years of experience in the area of nutritional counseling and dietetics, is credentialed as a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietition/Nutritionist, and Certified Diabetic Educator. She will perform one-on-one nutrition consultations by appointment, teach health-related classes at the store, and hold impromptu nutrition talks. These short, informal talks will take place throughout the store, allowing customers to learn more about healthy eating as they shop.

In other health-and-wellness news, Giant last week revealed its partnership with Abington Memorial Hospital to offer customers and their families in-store classes, childbirth and parenting education, and heart health programs. Serving residents of Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties, Abington is an independent, 570-bed acute care teaching hospital with a medical staff of more than 900 physicians and 5,500 employees.

Among the health-and-wellness features of the Willow Grove store -- billed as the first of its kind in the greater Philadelphia region, as well as Giant's second Super Food Store -- will be a designated gluten-free product area, located in the organic/natural Nature's Promise Marketplace section, with a variety of products available to those on restricted diets. Additionally, both the pharmacy and Nature's Promise Marketplace will offer a display of Healthy Ideas brochures providing resources and action steps for such common health concerns such as diabetes, allergies, and high blood pressure. The Nature's Promise Marketplace also will house "HealthNotes," a touchscreen computer kiosk where shoppers can access information on health conditions, vitamins and herbal supplements, as well as healthy recipes.

Giant operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets, and FoodSource banners.
