N.Y. Apples for a Good Cause
The New York Apple Association is sponsoring a fundraising promotion throughout March to support pediatric cancer research. Participating retailers are displaying signs with pink ribbon-bedecked apples on in-store displays of the state’s top varieties, and advertising in their sales circulars.
Retailers who have signed on to the program include A&P, Acme, Big M, Big Y, Fairway Foods, Foodtown, Gristedes, Key Food, Kings, Krasdale, Market Basket, Mars, Nice & Easy, Olean Wholesale, Pathmark, Price Chopper, ShopRite, Shurfine, Stop & Shop, Tops, Waldbaums, Wegmans, Western Beef, and Whole Foods.
NYAA will donate $25,000 to support pediatric cancer research in the state.
NYAA said yesterday there are still plenty of 2013-crop New York state apples in the market this year, thanks to a bumper crop harvested last fall. The state’s apple crop roared back in 2013 after devastating spring weather cut the 2012 crop by about half.
“In years like these, we have so much to be grateful for, and our industry is glad to be able to give back to the community this way,” said NYAA President Jim Allen.
This is the 11th year NYAA has conducted this cancer-fighting promotion to highlight apples’ healthy profile and cancer-fighting potential. From 2000-2012, NYAA has donated close to $323,000 to American Cancer Society, and to the Coaches vs. Cancer Program.
