Oregon Retailers and Food Suppliers Promote Hunger Awareness Month
PORTLAND, Ore. -- In recognition of Hunger Awareness Month, community-based independent Harry's Fresh Foods, chains Albertsons and Kroger-owned Fred Meyer, the Oregon Food Bank, and various Northwest food producers last week joined forces in an effort to fight hunger.
Part of the effort is a limited edition Stone Soup, which will be sold at retail, with a portion of the proceeds to go to the Oregon Food Bank.
(Story continues below.)
The product, which is actually a minestrone soup variation, was inspired by the story of Stone Soup, the folk legend of travelers who entered a village and motivated villagers to contribute the last of their food to a cauldron of soup that, when combined, fed the entire community. The Oregon Food Bank sponsored a celebration of this collaboration at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. Mayor Tom Potter read the story of Stone Soup to several preschool children and the Oregon Food Bank announced current hunger statistics.
Additionally, Harry's Fresh Food provided complimentary Stone Soup sampling to more than 1000 attendees.
