Philly ShopRite Gets EPA Nod

ShopRite of Roxborough has received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of the store’s waste diversion initiatives, which include food donations and an organic recycling program. The location is one of 11 Philadelphia-area ShopRite supermarkets owned and operated by Westville, N.J.-Brown’s Super stores.

The award is scheduled to be formally presented at the ShopRite of Roxborough on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.

“I am proud of our achievements, not only in reducing our waste through our food donations, but how this practice assists our local communities,” said David Deets, Brown’s director of store development and sustainability.

“Supermarkets are very large facilities that run 24/7, which can take a toll on the environment,” added Brown’s President and CEO Jeff Brown, who in 1988 founded the family-owned and -operated company that’s nationally known for opening stores in underserved urban communities. “We empower our employees to critically examine how we can reduce supermarkets’ carbon footprint and work toward a brighter, more sustainable future.”
